Sumi-E painting (Japanese brush painting on paper)

SUMI means black ink, and E means picture.

Therefore, the combination of these two words is traditionally a painting made in black ink.

But times change, and nowadays, even though black has remained the most important colour in sumi-e paintings, artists may choose to use watercolours (ivory black) in stead of ink, and they may wish to use a limited number of colours.
